Southington Community YMCA Aquatics

The Southington Community YMCA believes that aquatics is a lifelong activity for individuals of all ages and abilities.  Our Aquatic Department is dedicated to offering a positive difference for all through quality aquatic experiences.

The Aquatic Department Staff are driven to expand current and new programs to promote the life long activity of swimming.  Our YMCA offers YMCA swim lessons, lap swim, open/family swim, and water fitness/therapy.

Our well trained staff are caring, honest, respectful and responsible in meeting the YMCA mission.  This is our promise….

  • Our staff will constantly scan the pool so that we can recognize swimmers in distress within 10 seconds and provide assistance within an additional 10 seconds when needed.
  • When our staff is on duty, they will remain focused on their primary responsibility of protecting lives and offering exceptional programming.
  • Our lifeguard staff will always wear a rescue tube and carry a mask and gloves ready for use.
  • Our lifeguarding staff will always sit in an elevated lifeguard chair or patrol at the edge of the pool to ensure safety for all.
  • Our staff will attend regular training events to practice our skills and stay on the cutting edge of aquatic safety.
  • Our staff is here for you, the YMCA Members and your safety.  We will strive to make your visit to our YMCA pool enjoyable.

Testimonial - Daniel Nadeau

I was elated when asked to write a few lines in regards to the role the YMCA has played in our lives.  I do not know how to start due to the fact that there are so many “great “ memories at the YMCA.

First and foremost, Daniel, has been participating at the Y since the year 2000.  Daniel has been involved in an array of programs from gymnastics, sports, chess, cooking, drama and finally his “beloved” swimming.  Daniel “loves” to swim and is a proud member of  the YMCA Stingrays.  His swimming started with the Craft and Swim program.  The teachers including Miss Becky started him on the path to swimming.

The year 2007 started out as normal with Daniel signing up for the Stingrays Swim team but as the months went on his stamina starting decreasing.  Without going into much detail, Daniel was diagnosed on December 14, 2007 with a brain tumor.  He was treated at Yale Children’s Hospital and at Boston Mass General.

The YMCA took a stance of “compassionate action”, the minute, well actually the second, the staff and coaches were notified by me of the diagnosis.

The staff and coaches including Barbara, Kristen, Kevin, Lisa and swim team members were sending letters and cards by the hundreds to Daniel during his 9 months of treatment.  Coach Kristen and Kevin visited Daniel at Yale bringing “YMCA”  shirts, swim stuff and most importantly their love.

Coach Brian of “Kids Fitness” organized a t-shirt signing and a bench press fundraiser.  It was surprising and so caring.  Also, the front desk and office staff sent cards, food cards and may I say  with a “lot of love.”

Even when going through this traumatic time the “Y” especially the “Aquatics” Department always saw Daniel as “Whole” and told Daniel, “You can do it” and Daniel did do it.  He swam laps with Coaches looking on in between the Chemo regiments and the Yale Physicians were amazed at his stamina.  The doctors contributed Daniel’s stamina a lot to exercise and positive reinforcement.  I truly believe that and certainly there was a lot of prayer by all.

I would say to all that the Southington YMCA is a “family” and one who believes in “compassionate action”.

Daniel is doing well now and he will be back swimming at the Y with his team this summer 2009 .  A big THANK YOU for all the thoughts, prayers and compassionate action to Daniel.
